It’s Award Season

The Leadership in Women’s Sailing Award nominations close February 1. There’s still time to nominate your sailing hero for the Award, but don’t dally. The honor cosponsored by NWSA and BoatUS has been bestowed upon sailors exhibiting national leadership since 1999. Recipients include: 2002 Gail Hine, renown as the mother of women’s sailing conferences; 2003 Dawn Riley, team captain of the first all-women’s America’s Cup team, America3; 2015 Sally Helme, and 2004 Doris Colgate, worked to create and sponsor the precursor to NWSA’s educational and networking conference; 2018 Sheila McCurdy, first female commodore of the Cruising Club of America and a director of the US Sailing Association. The Sue Corl Youth Sailing Scholarship applications will be accepted beginning February 1, 2023. The Scholarship for an enhanced sailing experience or program is for girls between the ages of 14 and 19, with a financial need to broaden her sailing experiences. The scholarship may be, but is not limited to, enrollment in:

An advanced sailing program
A racing program
A tall ship or live-aboard experience
A marine or maritime trades or related program

Sailing-related programs take precedence. Scholarship award is limited to $500. WSF encourages all eligible young women to apply.

Spotlight on Mary Goff

Captain Mary Goff started sailing as a young adult on an Islander 36 with her husband. Fast forward to 2015, she got a job at Narragansett Sailing School. Mary loved the job so much she bought the school! Her passion to introduce people to the “World of Sailing” is her livelihood and joy. Teaching and empowering women to dock a boat in a slip, pick up a mooring singlehanded and to confidently sail, bring her fulfillment.

Mary will instruct at the June 3, National Women’s Sailing Conference at Sail Newport in Rhode Island.
